LG Chocolate black set

LG is bringing in the big guns - they announced a successor of the extremely popular Black Label series pioneer - LG Chocolate. The original Chocolate was the most popular phone in LG's history, selling over 21 million handsets, and so understandably its reincarnation is greeted with excitement.

The new LG Chocolate is set to be fourth in their fashion series. It will be designed by the same team that created the original Chocolate and, as they say, it will be "a disruptive force in conventional mobile screens". It's official unveiling is scheduled for August, with a promise of more information and images. For now, there's very little of both.

What we have is artsy, very dark photos that give a murky glimpse at the silhouette of the phone. It's not entirely clear but it seems that the disrupting of conventional screens will be in the name of maximizing usability and maintaining a minimalist-inspired style. Translation - "it's going to be an iPhone killer". The new Chocolate's appeal will be boosted in no small part by the exclusive Label club Black membership.

Now, for a quick game of "strange rumors". The model number will be BL40 (though that may change) and will probably support HSDPA (not surprising). The screen is said to have an extremely peculiar aspect ratio of 21:9 and a resolution of 800x345 pixels. That is quite wide, much wider than your typical HDTV. How this ties with "maximizing usability" (if that's even true) we don't know , but it's sure to come with its own set of advantages and burdens. Another rumored spec, one that's less iffy is a 5-megapixel camera.

The original resolution of the video is 852 x 480 pixels, which suggests that this will also be the resolution of the Rachael display. Coming with the sweet 16:9 aspect ratio this is the highest resolution screen we have seen so far on a mobile phone.

S60 Nokia E75 getting IM client

Nokia Beta Labs have just published a new version of Nokia Messaging app, which now allows desktop-like instant messaging on a Nokia smartphone along with the regular email features.

Only Nokia E75 will get the application for now but Nokia promise to add support for more devices as soon as possible.

The new Nokia Messaging promises real desktop-like chat experience allowing you to keep in touch with friends and family throughout various third-party IM networks.

Also enabled are background notifications of new incoming messages which show up whilst the app is minimized.

Since the new application has just seen daylight for the first time only Yahoo! Messenger and Ovi chat are supported, however, the supported communities list should continue growing.

An interesting fact is that Nokia will probably go as far as charging for the app the owners of certain S60 devices.

Nokia E75 owners however get a lifetime subscription to the Nokia Messaging service and all E75 owners can download it right away.

How to Turn your T-Mobile G1 into multi touch

Well, well, what do we have here? A T-Mobile G1 with the new HTC Sense UI. HTC Hero is currently the only HTC device featuring the impressive new UI and even though HTC will reportedly offer it to their other handsets, all T-Mobile Android phones won't be on that list at all. However, some Italians managed to run a ported version of the UI called SuperHERO on a T-Mobile G1/HTC Dream.

If you want to give it a go, you'll need to flash your T-Mobile G1 with the SuperHERO ROM (see the source at the end of the article). The software includes a part of the real Hero's firmware. Along with the sexy looking user interface you'll also have multi-touch support enabled much like on the Hero.

Samsung Omnia II upgraded to Windows Mobile 6.5

Microsoft couldn't help themselves but brag that the Samsung Omnia II running Windows Mobile 6.5 will be available through Mobilkom Austria exclusively starting late September. They will be the first Austrian mobile operator to get the new OS.

It's yet unclear if the other countries will be as lucky as Austria and get the Omnia II running WinMo 6.5 straight out of the box. The official announcement stated that the phone will be available with Windows Mobile 6.1, which could be subsequently upgraded to 6.5. At least now we know for sure that this upgrade will come no later than September.

They official press release of Mobikom also states that the Omnia II sports the "biggest OLED display on a mobile device". And it does, the Omnia II just manages to outdo its sibling - the Omnia HD, which also has a 3.7" OLED display. The different aspect ratios lead to slightly different surface area but only just.

Still, it's an impressive display as we saw in our preview. And with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 HSUPA plus Wi-Fi make the big touchscreen with WVGA resolution a fast portal to the Internet. The camera is no wimp either - 5MP with autofocus and D1 video recording is top of the line for Windows Mobile handsets.

Now might be a good time to clear out that the 8MP-sporting Omnia II units that appeared on some hands-on videos online are only prototypes and Samsung do not currently plan an 8MP version of the handset.

The Omnia II powered by an 800MHz CPU with dedicated graphics chip, which makes it one of the speediest WinMo devices. It is also a champ at storage with up to 16GB of internal storage and support for up to 32GB microSD cards.

GPS, DivX/XviD support out of the box, not to mention the 3D games and fancy 3D interface round of the Samsung Omnia II to be a geek's dream. The 3.5 mm audio jack and microUSB, which was recently picked as Europe's standard charger plug, are also greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, there isn't any info about pricing in the press release. Anyway, we respectfully envy the geeks of Austria and hope carriers in other countries will pick up the Samsung Omnia II soon.

Less than a month has passed since the Nokia N97 hit the shelves and here comes its first official firmware update. Bringing a whole load of bugfixes this new firmware should have a pretty positive impact on user experience.

The new version of the N97 firmware is already available in several countries with worldwide availability coming in the following days. So if you are a proud owner of a shiny N97 you might check out if it's already available for you.

According to Nokia, the most significant fixes that the new firmware brings are in the software stability, especially email, imaging, USB detection, widget stability and display transitions. We also noticed that the Ovi client is automatically installed to encourage users to use Nokia's side project.

You can get the new firmware as a FOTA update or you can rely on the good old Nokia Software updater and download and apply it through USB connection.

Slowly, but surely the Toshiba TG01 is becoming available through carriers in different countries. By 9 July you could add the UK to the list of lucky countries that have access to the first Snapdragon handset following Spain, Japan and Germany.

The Toshiba TG01 is already available in Spain through Movistar, and as we reported a while back, O2 Germany snatched an exclusive deal to offer the phone in Germany. It should have launched a few days ago but O2's online store still has it as "Coming soon". The prices are up though - 150 euro with a contract and 500 euro commitment-free.

The UK will also get on the TG01 action in just a week, though there's no mention of which carrier will get it. Pricing is unknown too, but we guess we'll learn more on the 9 July.

We've covered the Toshiba TG01's overwhelming features time and again; you can read our preliminary thoughts here. We'll just mention the three most striking features, we can't resist - 1GHz CPU, 4.1" WVGA touchscreen, 9.9 mm thick.

The iPhone inabilities have been a matter of discussion at least as much as its virtues. Unfortunately, video recording (or better yet the lack of it) has often been a subject of criticism. But that will surely become a thing of the past since the developer's beta of iPhone OS 3.0 is supposedly sprinkled with clues that video recording will definitely be coming to the upcoming iPhone 2009.

It's this time of the year again, and with Apple's next announcement in June nearing, not a day goes by without some new iPhone rumors surfacing. Rumors are always to be taken with a pinch of salt, but this one seems as solid as a rock.

The iPhone 2009 is rumored to have a better 3.2 megapixel camera in store for us but no matter the megapixel count, it will almost certainly support video recording as the following camera screenshot reveals. Video recording has never been a part of the originally announced iPhone OS 3.0 new features, so it's highly possible that iPhone 2G and 3G will most probably be left out in the cold.

The T-Mobile G1 is the Googlephone. Did we really need to say that? Well, there's more Google in this story than there is phone, so we guess we did. We've got a new contender on the race track but we're talking no rookie here. If you thought Apple made the phone game breathtaking, think of where it's all heading with Google keen to play along. Unlike the iPhone Mac OS X, the Android is the joint effort of the whole Open Handset Alliance, which brings together makers that sure know the drill. So much for the rookie, as long as Google is siding with Asus, HTC, LG, Garmin, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba.

But well, that's the bigger story. We have the first chapter right here, and it's called the T-Mobile G1 or HTC Dream if you prefer. The first impression sure is important. So, there we go.

According to telegraph.co.uk british mobile giant Vodafone will be carrying exclusive on next HTC-made Android powered handset, named G2.

First generation G1 phones were sold exclusively by T-Mobile in UK and so far failed to attract large number of customers.

The second generation Google phone, apparently called the HTC Magic, reportedly boasts a 3.2 megapixel camera, WiFi, and a built-in GPS receiver, which already present in G1.

Other handset manufacturers are rumoured to be working on their own Android driven handset, but we have not heard any firm dates on releases so far. Android presense on Mobile World Congress this week has been weak as well.

Samsung had been expected to launch an Android-based phone in Barcelona this week, but executives have conceded that the phone will be delayed until later this year.

The exclusive deal to supply the G2 will provide a significant boost to Vodafone as it battles Apple’s dominance of the smartphone market.

Vodafone announced today that 500 jobs at its UK mobile phone business will be cut to save £1bn in operating expenses by 2011. Vodafone’s european businesses may see cut in jobs as well, which include Germany, Italy and Spain.

In December 2008 Vodafone already announced that 150 employees in Vodafone Ireland will be made redundant.

Weak consumer spending is forcing mobile operators and handset manufacturers to cut costs and optimize their operations. Nokia announced voluntary redundancy and is hoping that it can reduce it’s global workforce by 1000 people.

Nokia hopes to reduce the number of involuntary redundancies that it may have to make as part of cost efficiency plans.

Nokia will open application on 1 March for its Voluntary Resignation Package until 1,000 people have applied. Application will close at the latest on 31 May. Senior executives and direct labourers will be exempt.

Acer announced four PocketPC's, which we'll roll out in a mo but not before a glimpse of what seems a properly done homework in terms of getting to know their market better. Acer have split consumers into three groups to pitch their latest releases accordingly.

The first group is that of power users. They want the best there is and know how to make the best of it.

For the second market group communication prowess comes first and they hold personal and professional information security above all else.

The third group is just loosely defined but the key properties are stylish design, reflecting the user's personality and ease of use, especially when it comes to mobile Internet.

For all of their devices no matter what group they fit in, Acer have prepared a custom thumbable user interface to sit on top the deep murky waters of Windows Mobile.

The Acer M900 tries to cater to the power user. The spec sheet of this jack-of-all-trades includes Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, a 3.8 inch touchscreen of WVGA resolution and a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, as well as GPS and a 5 MP camera with autofocus and flash.

The Acer M900 fits the pragmatic user profile too as it comes with HSDPA and full office document editing. Another feature, that's still quite rare too, is the fingerprint sensor for better security management. With an expandable memory, all that's missing is Wi-Fi.

LG Renoir back in black as KC910i, gets an overhaul

Just in time for Pierre-Auguste Renoir's anniversary (born on February 25, 1841) LG unveil an update of their own Renoir, which also goes by the less inspired name of LG KC910. It won't be much of a spoiler to say that a Renoir is only supposed to grow in value over time.

It's important to note though that the black LG Renoir is not a new model, but just a facelift of the original KC910 and both versions will be available concurrently (possibly in different markets).

The newcomer is still officially called LG KC910 Renoir at many sources but at the LG booth at MWC 2009 it was labeled as LG KC910i, so we'll stick to that to avoid confusion.

The most obvious differences are that the LG KC910i Renoir is now all black and has lost the mechanical camera lens cover. In hand, one can't help but notice that it is also slightly thicker - perhaps the same reason why the camera lens doesn't stick out that much now.

The mechanical cover is not the only change in the imaging department. The camera interface has been revamped. It's all new and improved and fixes a little nuisance of the old version - it no longer crops part of the image in the viewfinder so what you frame is what you get.

Nokia unveil N86 8MP, this time it's as official as it gets

As you probably already know, Nokia N86 leaked yesterday, but today it makes the news all official. Named Nokia N86 8MP, it's got the first 28mm wide angle lens on a mobile phone. There's also a kickstand, and the rest of the specs are pretty close to what Nokia N85 already offers.

The new Nokia N86 8MP (yeah, it doesn't get any more obvious than that) is the first 8 megapixel cameraphone to sport a wide 28mm lens. There are also other goodies such as a mechanical shutter as on the Samsung INNOV8, allegedly a new, better Carl Zeiss lens.

Unfortunately, there's only a dual LED flash on board the N85 8MP. However according to Nokia, the LED flash is a third generation one and should effectively work at distances of up to 3.5 m.
