Sony Ericsson G705 review: Slide-o-matic

One of a kind is the last thing to call Sony Ericsson G705 upon as much as a glimpse. But conceited scoffs may be bitterly regretted. Wi-Fi, GPS and lightning fast data are likely to turn the snooty sneer into an embarrassed smirk.

Now, one of a kind may be not precisely right but the G705 is pretty darn close. The handset is only the second feature phone in the Sony Ericsson Generation Web lineup. To narrow it down even further, the G705 is only the company's second feature phone to sport both WLAN and GPS. And since the other one is proudly perched at the top of the Cybershot tree, the G705 has the midrange all to itself. What a cheeky chap!.

Sony Ericsson W715 and C510 preview

Sony Ericsson announced several new phones yesterday and we managed to snatch the Sony Ericsson C510 Cyber-shot and Sony Ericsson W715 Walkman for quick and dirty hands-on session. Now those two are certainly not final retail versions, so we won't be putting them through our full reviewing routine. Just remember - this is a short preview, not a full-blown review article.

The Sony Ericsson W715 Walkman is a Wi-Fi/GPS-enabled slider made exclusively for Vodafone. It's is practically identical to the Sony Ericsson G705 that we already reviewed.

Wi-Fi (with DLNA), GPS receiver, a 3 megapixel snapper with geotagging and an accelerometer that allows for auto screen rotation and motion gaming are its main selling points.

Additionally, the W715 is loaded with Walkman goodies such as the latest Walkman music player, TrackID, SenseMe and Shake control.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic review: Young as you feel

t's touchscreen o'clock for Nokia and the stage is set for the 5800 XpressMusic. Go ahead and touch it. We did and we've got a story to tell.

Now, it's technically not the first time Nokia get their hands dirty with touch screens, but it sure feels they really mean business this time. For Nokia 5800 is not the only story here. The smart platform with the most influential touch receives its first trial by touch. Being the first device running Series 60 5th alone is enough for the 5800 to be remembered by.

LG KS360 review

LG KS360 is a mid-ranger that will easily catch your eye with bold colors and quirky controls. LG have managed to create a handset that's cunningly full of character, though it's kinda hard to think of it in the hands of a grown-up. It does seem like a toy at first glance and those color combos are to die for if you are of certain age and attitude.

Yet quite unexpectedly, LG KS360 is quick to serve a bunch of nice features such as a large and vivid 2.4-inch display, full QWERTY keyboard, a 2 megapixel snapper and… believe it or not… a wee tot of touchscreen.

This midrange phone isn't exactly hard to keep your cool about and the flashy paintjobs don't help much either. But we were pleasantly surprised by the ergonomics and performance of the KS360. So while we gear up to put the LG KS360 through its paces, you better get yourself ready to be surprised too.

The LG KS360 will be available in several color combinations, some of which will be exclusive to various carriers - the full list of color options includes Black and red, Black and silver, White and soft pink, and Titanium and bright blue.

The young and texting-savvy are two obvious targets of the slide-out QWERTY KS360. And while 18+ is not very likely, bill payers are given some sort of say with pay-as-you-go. The manufacturer is teaming up with operators such as Orange to offer the devices with the added value of free messages and free access to social community websites such as MySpace, Bebo, and FaceBook on Pay-as-you-go basis.

Currently the handset can be found for around 80 GBP (140 US dollars or 99 euro) at Orange UK (the pink color version is one of their exclusive deals too). So if you are looking for a LG KS360, we guess your carrier's retail stores are the place to start.

The unusual form factor puts the LG KS360 into a really narrow market segment currently cornered by the T-Mobile Sidekick family (the Sidekick Slide - a joint effort of Danger and Motorola - being the recent model at T-Mobile UK).

What both devices have in common are lively colors, QWERTY keypad and the young targeting, but with a decisive difference. T-Mobile is offering the Sidekick only on a Pay-monthly basis, while the KS360 is available on Pay-as-you-go. Additionally, the Sidekick Slide is way larger and heavier than the LG KS360.

5 megapixel Nokia 6700 with GPS and Nokia Maps

The 5 megapixel Nokia 6700 classic is the latest S40 device by Nokia, considered as a modern successor of the popular Nokia 6300 and expected to become a bestseller as its forerunner.

The feature-rich specs sheet of the Nokia 6700 classic will serve you with stuff such as a 5 megapixel autofocus camera, GPS navigation with Nokia Maps and the awesome Nokia WebKit Open Source Browser, previously available only on the Symbian S60 smartphones.

At only 11mm of thickness, the Nokia 6700 sports a full metal keymat, a 2.2-inch 16M color QVGA display and supports both quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS networks (plus HSDPA up to 10 Mbps).

The Nokia 6700 classic also has a built-in accelerometer for tap-for-clock and turn-to-mute features, which we first saw in the Nokia Arte lineup.

Unfortunately, video recording with 6700c maxes out at VGA@15fps (or CIF@30fps) and there doesn't seem to be Wi-Fi connectivity or even a document viewer, which were both available on the Nokia 6260 slide.

Samsung S3500 spefication

Photos of a new mid-range Samsung S3500 leaked online. The stylish slider has a relatively modest specs sheet and will most probably rely on design and attractive pricing to lure some potential customers.

Samsung S3500 has a styling quite similar to the highly successful U900 Soul. Functionality-wise however it stands a couple of levels lower than the company's upper midrange flagship.

The S3500 sports quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity as well as Bluetooth and USB. The handset will sport a 262K color QVGA display of yet unknown size. It also has 35 MB of internal memory, expandable through the microSD card slot.

There is yet no information about the availably or the pricing of the handset but with MWC 2009 due in a couple of weeks we might just get to see it in person.

New Sony Ericsson Frances is C903

The rumored Sony Ericsson Frances has now received a proper name - it will be called Sony Ericsson C903. Much like a slider version of the 5 megapixel Cyber-Shot Filippa, but with GPS receiver.
The competition for leaked upcoming and unannounced phones continues. In this new edition we present you the Sony Ericsson C903, also known under the codename Frances.
The new Cyber-Shot will join the family with 5 megapixel camera, 2.4-inch QVGA screen, GPS and slide design solution. It should be an upgraded version of the SE C901 (Filippa), but there is no info about xenon flash presence. The usual suspect aplications are here: PhotoFix, Face Detection and Smile Shutter.

Wi-Fi connectivity will not be available since C903 will have a lower tag price than the flagman C905.
The official announcement, logically, will be at MWC 2009 and the expected release - in the end of Q2 this year.

Free International SMS

Here is a new service that promises to make sending and receiving text messages free, and that includes international texting. It's called mjoy and is a product of German based, Venista Group. I tried the service and it works and is free, although there are some limitations. Your SMS are free because they are sent from a mobile (or PC) web interface. So they are only "free" if you have an unlimited data plan or stay within the limits of your data bundle. Here's how it works:
1. Sign up at mjoy.com using your mobile or PC browser. Initial registration asks for your country and mobile phone number.
2. You will receive a text with a special sign up URL, open it in your mobile browser and complete the registration process by choosing an ID and password.
3. Send your texts from within the mjoy mobile web app (2nd image). The person who receives the text will see that it came from your mobile number. A message reading "Text for FREE with http://mjoy.com" is appended to every message.
4. If the recipient replies to the message in the normal way, by hitting "Reply" in their phone's inbox, replying won't be free for them and if you pay for incoming messages it won't be free for you to receive either.
5. If you convince your friends to sign up for mjoy then you can text with them for free using the mobile web. Messages sent to mjoy members end up in their inbox in the mjoy web app (3rd image) rather than in the phone's SMS inbox. Web based mjoy messages can be of unlimited size and there is a nice threaded messaging interface.

The killer feature of mjoy is obviously being able to send texts for free to almost anywhere in the world. mjoy is available in about 180 countries from Afganistan to Zimbabwe including the US, Canada, all of Europe, India, China, Japan, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and even Cuba. The only country I noticed as missing was North Korea.

None of this is exactly new; GizmoSMS, text4Free and txtDrop all offer similar services, but only from a "full web" site rather than a mobile one, although these sites are usable in mobile full web browsers like Opera Mini or mobile Safari. mjoy's most direct competitor is probably the well established social network Wadja which lets members send texts for free to any number from the Wadja mobile web site.

mjoy has a nice clean texting-focused user interface, although it doesn't seem quite finiished yet. You are supposed to be able to add your contacts to mjoy so that you don't have to key their phone numbers every time. However, I get the message "Addressb.book service temporarily not available" when I try to use it.

I'm never completely comfortable giving my mobile numbers to new web services like mjoy. There's always the fear that I'll end up being bombarded with unwanted messages, possibly even premium messages. mjoy has a privacy policy and a terms of service page. I far as I could determine from the legalese, mjoy won't send you premium messages but will send notifications of new messages in your inbox, which if you pay for incoming messages, kind of defeats the whole free messaging thing.

One limitation of mjoy for me is that your account is linked to a single phone number. You can change the number and when you do mjoy sends a text to the new number with a link to validate that number. I'd like to see something more like the way GrandCentral works, were you can set up multiple numbers on your account and switch between them instantly as you switch phones.

mjoy is ad supported. There are a couple of ads on each page of the site but no ads embedded in messages. There is also a search page included as a part of mjoy which offers Google, YouTube and Amazon search. The Amazon results include affiliate codes so mjoy gets a small percentage of the cost of anything you buy through them.

Sending texts through messaging aggregators and carrier gateways costs real money, a couple cents per SMS. I don't see how mjoy can cover this cost with just Adsense and Amazon affiliate revenues. Venista plans to add social networking features and more online shopping including the sale of wallpapers, ringtones and full track music downloads, which should generate considerably more income.

Free messaging is a tough business but could be viable if used as a "hook" to drive customers to other non-free services. I hope mjoy can make it work as messaging is one of the biggest ripoffs in mobile with most carriers in the US now charging 20 cents for each message sent or received. I'd love to see someone provide a viable free or low cost alternative. Source: HDvoice
